Program Description

Successful completion of a two-year program in Proctology qualifies and prepares the resident to take the Qualifying and the Certifying Examinations of the American Osteopathic Board of Proctologists. The Proctology Residency Program at Grandview offers a well-rounded clinical experience for the resident, providing an abundant number and variety of surgical and endoscopic cases.  Our excellent didactic activities include weekly textbook chapter reading and monthly pathology conference. The aim of our program is to produce well-rounded, skilled proctologists who are committed to life-long learning. Residents are taught by faculty on a one-to-one basis and perform surgery under faculty supervision.

At the completion of the residency, the trainee will have factual knowledge and technical skills with respect to preoperative evaluation, operative management and postoperative care of patients with lower gastrointestinal disease. This includes knowledge of the anatomy and embryology pertinent to the practice of proctology. The trainee will have a thorough understanding of the diagnosis, medical and surgical treatment of benign anorectal and colonic disorders, as well as of functional disorders affecting the lower gastrointestinal tract and pelvic floor. The resident does receive an extensive exposure to office practice during the residency training.

Currently Grandview is offering one Proctology Residency position per Academic year. Candidates shall also be members of the AOA, and maintain membership throughout their specialty training. Accepted applicants are required to apply for license to practice Osteopathic Medicine and Surgery in the State of Ohio . Application requirements include completed application form with recent picture, official transcripts, copies of board scores and/or state licensure, copy of intern certificate, original letter of recommendation from current Director of Medical Education, three letters of recommendation, copy of medical school diploma, current curriculum vitae, and personal statement. All application materials must be submitted to the Grandview Department of Medical Education.
