Alison Clarey, DO Medical Education 405 W. Grand Ave. Dayton, OH 45405 Phone: (800) 497-1559 Fax: (937) 723-5017 Dr. Clarey, the first female president of the American College of Osteopathic Surgeons, earned her medical degree at the College of Osteopathic Medicine and Surgery in Des Moines. She came to Grandview for her internship and residency in general surgery, and has maintained a private practice in Dayton since 1978. Dr. Clarey is board certified in general surgery and is a fellow of the American College of Osteopathic Surgeons. She is an American Osteopathic Board of Surgery clinical and oral examiner. Dr. Clarey also serves as an AOA General Surgery Residency Program Inspector. Dr. Clarey's academic affiliations include Ohio University College of Osteopathic Medicine, where she is an Associate Professor of General Surgery, and Wright State University School of Medicine, where she is part of the teaching faculty in General Surgery.

It is the goal of this program to meet the ever changing needs of residency training in General Surgery to meet the demands of training the modern surgeon. We provide progressive, continuous training to satisfy all requirements necessary for eventual certification in General Surgery by the American Osteopathic Association through the American Osteopathic Board of Surgery. This program is under the direction of the Department of General Surgery at Grandview Hospital through the Residency Program Director at Grandview Hospital.

The Department of General Surgery at Grandview Hospital assumes the obligation to supervise training of General Surgery Residents.

Residents are exposed to basic sciences as related to surgical practice, and have required rotations in various specialty areas relating to the practice of surgery. (This will be defined more clearly later in this outline). There is special emphasis on developing technical skills, diagnostic competency, sound medical and surgical judgment, preoperative and postoperative care, as well as progressive development and responsibility in the seven competencies: professionalism, Osteopathic principles and practices, medical knowledge, communication and interpersonal skills, practices-based learning, systems-based practice, and patient care. Grandview’s General Surgery residency program provides a variety of educationally based programming:

• Weekly citywide Grand Rounds in conjunction with Wright State University General Surgery Residency Program.
• Daily morning didactics.
• Monthly journal clubs and M/M.
• Monthly CORE lectures (full day of didactics with General Surgery residents from across Ohio).
• Once a week resident-guided power point presentations.

In addition, first year residents will participate in Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS).

Fellowships: Grandview’s General Surgery program offers exposure to several surgery fellowships in the course of the residency. A General Vascular Fellowship is offered at Grandview while Grant Medical Center in Columbus offers a Trauma/Critical Care Fellowship. Residents in the General Surgery program will have exposure to both programs during the course of the residency.
