Fellowship, Music & Inspiration
at GMH Prayer Breakfast

Pastor Karl Haffner

Employees, volunteers, physicians and friends of Greene Memorial Hospital came together at the 26th annual Greene Memorial Hospital Prayer Breakfast the morning of May 20 for a meal complete with fellowship, music and the presentation of the Rev. Kenneth Beams Award. This year Pastor Karl Haffner from Kettering Seventh-day Adventist church delivered the inspirational message.

Young musician Andrew B. Hanson entertained the attendees with classical violin music. Andrew is the grandson of GMH President Greg Henderson.

Nedra Lindsay, physical therapy assistant, is the winner of this year’s Rev. Kenneth Beams Award. Nedra, a resident of Fairborn, was chosen for her generous spirit and for her significant contributions to many honorable causes, most notably the annual Circle of Victory Cancer Walk/Run.

Rev. Ron Swiger, Greene Memorial Hospital Chaplain, says Nedra, who has worked for Greene Therapy Services for a total of 17 years in both inpatient and outpatient care, exemplifies the spirit of the Rev. Kenneth Beams Award.

“She is very deserving, a wonderful person who is very dedicated and always willing to help those in need,” says Chaplain Swiger.

At this year’s Prayer Breakfast, Chaplain Swiger shared a story that demonstrates Nedra’s compassion for others. When a young patient shared with Nedra his wish to learn to play the guitar, she went out and bought him the guitar. She knew that his family could not afford the guitar, and she made his dream possible.

Nedra is well-known around Greene Memorial Hospital for her generosity and willingness to donate time and resources to various causes. Her good friend Dee Mendenhall, office coordinator for medical oncology at GMH, says that Nedra is always finding new ways to help both people and animals in need. “Just recently Nedra was collecting cans to pay for the medication for a sick dog who belongs to a 10-year-old girl,” says Dee.

As a breast cancer survivor, Nedra is passionate about breast cancer awareness. Not only does Nedra spend countless hours each year raising money for the Greene Foundation’s annual breast cancer awareness event, the Circle of Victory Cancer Walk/Run, she also donates many of the raffle prizes herself. Recently, Nedra was selected by the Department of Defense as a consumer reviewer to assist in research for ways to allocate funds for breast cancer initiatives.

Nedra also volunteers with the Victoria Theater Association and the Schuster Performing Arts Center, and enjoys playing the harmonica and participating in a dart league. An animal advocate, Nedra has a dog Sebastian and a cat Gracie.

When she received the Beams award, Nedra thanked her friends, family, coworkers as well as her pastor Gloria Wade-Dillon and church community at Glory Ministries Church in Xenia.

What is the Rev. Kenneth Beams Award?
Named for the first paid chaplain at Greene Memorial Hospital, the Rev. Kenneth Beams award is given each year to a person who has demonstrated outstanding service to the community, the church and Greene Memorial Hospital as either a volunteer or employee. Rev. Beams served as chaplain and volunteer coordinator at Greene Memorial Hospital from 1977 until his sudden death in 1984.
