Greene Memorial Hospital Laboratory has been awarded accreditation by the Accreditation Committee of the College of American Pathologists (CAP), based on the results of a recent onsite inspection. The stringent inspection program examines the laboratory’s records and quality control of procedures for the preceding two years, as well as the laboratory’s equipment, facilities, safety program, record, and overall management. The laboratory’s director, Deborah E. Ward, MD, was congratulated for the excellence of the services being provided and being one of the 7,000 CAP-accredited laboratories worldwide.

Arthritis Walk and Car Show Benefit Arthritis Foundation
The Annual Arthritis Walk was held on May 8 to raise awareness and funds to fight arthritis, the nation’s most common cause of disability. The Arthritis Walk® is the Arthritis Foundation’s annual nationwide event. Also the second annual car show was held in conjunction with the walk and sponsored by Southview Medical Center, Orthopedic Associates of SW Ohio, and the Hand Center of Southwestern Ohio. Their efforts have helped raise $25,600 to date. These groups and event participants are helping the Arthritis Foundation achieve its mission to improve lives through leadership in the prevention, control and cure of arthritis.

Mike Brendel Michael J. Brendel, RN has joined Kettering Medical Center and Sycamore Medical Center leadership team as director for the Cardiac Service Line. Mike is a graduate of KCMA first as a radiologic technologist, and then as a registered nurse. He also obtained a bachelor’s degree in management /health care through Park University and will complete a Master’s of Health Care Administration this year. Recently, he has been consulting with Fremon-Rideout Health Group serving as clinical administrative director in emergency, critical care and cardiac services in a variety of health care environments. Debbie Brendel, RN, Michael’s wife, will also be joining the KMC nursing staff working in Oncology services.

Stanley Brooks of Environmental Services at Greene Memorial Hospital participated in a recent Dayton Urban League Guild event as DJ “Stan-The-Man” Brooks. The 3rd Annual Oldies But Goodies event had over two hundred people in attendance that love to dance, listen to great music, and enjoy food and fellowship with friends. Stan-The-Man was the heart of the party spinning all of the greatest tunes. He provides the right music for whatever the occasion.

The Central Sterile Processing Department at KMC has been given honorable mention as part of “Healthcare Purchasing News” publication’s SPD Department of the Year Contest. This national publication has an annual contest to find the most innovation and most improved Central Service/Sterile Processing Departments throughout the country. With well over 1,000 hospitals entering this contest annually, everyone is extremely proud of all the staff members who contribute daily to providing the quality patient care that KHN is known for.

Grace Curtis recently has officially joined the team at Kettering Health Network Information Systems Department and the Symphony project. Grace is continuing her present duties as director of Physician and Hospital Connectivity and Symphony outreach.

Frank Engler Frank Engler, director, Network Marketing & Communications, presented the highlights of current KHN programs and construction projects during the Dayton Hispanic Chamber of Commerce held at Moraine Farm. He also hosted the Good Neighbor House Board of Trustees and their spouses for the Kick-Off of a major Capital Campaign for the new GNH building that will feature expanded facilities, including much needed larger dental and health clinics. During both occasions, Frank presented notable and interesting historical facts about Colonel Deeds, Charles F. Kettering, and their inventions that changed the world. He also conducted an extensive tour of the Moraine farm residence. Frank is a ten year member of the Good Neighbor House Board of Trustees.

Carol Enscoe Carol Enscoe, manager, KHN Corporate Special Events, was named “2010 Planner of the Year” for the state of Ohio during the Meeting Professional International (MPI) Ohio Chapter Annual Recognition Event on June 16 at Huntington Bank Capitol Club in Columbus. Presented with the award in front of 100 event management professionals from across the state, Carol was honored for her positive attitude, dedicated service and active participation on various MPI committees and projects.


Glenda Glavic Glenda Glavic, M.B.A., BS, MT, (ASCP), recently received her Master of Business Administration in Hospital Administration from Ashford University. Glenda, who currently serves as director of Diagnostic Services, has been with GMH for 17 years.

She is now a clinical nurse specialist, specializing in wound care and diabetes. She works at Greene Memorial Hospital in telemetry. Johnson (right) is pictured with her mentor, Cecilia Krusling, M.S., ACNS-BC, CWOCN, clinical nurse manager at the Sycamore Wound Center. Janice completed 240 hours of her practicum for her degree under the direction of Cecilia.

Janet Gray Michaelis, B.A., RN, Grandview Emergency Department, authored an article that has been published in the July Nursing 2010 journal. The article, titled “Using text messaging to fill staff vacancies – fast” focuses on a pilot project in the Grandview ED using e-mail-to-mobile phone messaging to contact staff. The system that Michaelis developed enabled 97 percent of the ED nurses with a single e-mail message. Read the full article here.

Welcome to Kathy Peroutka who is the new director for Kettering Behavioral Medical Center. Kathy comes with extensive background in the behavioral health arena both as a licensed professional clinical counselor and in various leadership roles. She has worked with both the adult and child/adolescent populations. Most recently, Kathy served as program director for young child assessment and treatment services at Samaritan Behavioral Health. Kathy has begun her transition to her role with responsibility for overseeing inpatient, outpatient and partial hospitalization programs at KBMC. A sincere thank you is extended to Jean Ruppert for her leadership at KBMC for the past 18 months. She has helped the team move forward in several areas including the near complete building for the partial hospitalization program.

Mike Prince, Amanda Langford, Stephanie Mosier and Dan Hutchins all passed their CCRN specialty certification for critical care nurses. All work in the GMH Intensive Care Unit. CCRN certification validates knowledge of nursing care of acutely and critically ill patients to hospital administrators, peers, patients and nurses themselves. CCRN certification promotes continuing excellence in the critical care nursing field and helps nursing professionals maintain an up-to-date knowledge base of acute and critical care nursing.

Jeffery Rengel, MD, a Wright Patterson Air Force Base physician who and anesthesiologist at Kettering Medical Center, was involved in a harrowing surgery, during his deployment in Afghanistan. Dr. Rengel and neurosurgeon, Maj. John Bini, removed a live 14.5 mm round out of the scalp of an Afghan National Army soldier. During the surgery, both doctors had to wear body armor for their protection. Fewer that 50 cases of unexploded ordinance have been surgically removed in the past 50 years. The patient is continuing to improve thanks to the help of both doctors.

Reunion of Nurses
(from left) Karen Keller, Glen Gibbons and Rita Prichard Three Kettering Health Network employees, Karen Keller, Glen Gibbons, and Rita Prichard have been reunited after years of different career paths. All three were in classes together and graduated from Sinclair Community College of Nursing in 1983. Karen works as clinical nurse manager at Southview, Glen is vice president of patient care at Greene, and Rita is vice president of patient care at Southview.

Theresa Slyder has accepted the part time supervisor/auxiliary float position and will be staying at Southview. While serving as clinical nurse manager, Theresa managed a 56-bed unit and a staff of 80 including the float pool and supervisors. In her years on the units she has taken them from a 25 percent vacancy rate initially to the current zero percent vacancy. She accepted her new position to be able to spend more time with her three school-age children and family.

Marcy Winnenberg Marcy Winnenberg, M.A., BS, MT (ASCP) SH, laboratory manager at GMH, has received her Master of Arts in Hospital Administration from Ashford University. Marcy has been a GMH employee for five years.
