Taking Care of Baby

You will receive a complete guide to newborn care to assist you in caring for your baby during the first few months.

Breastfeeding Your Baby

There are many advantages for both your baby and you if you choose to breastfeed your baby.

For baby:
  • Fewer allergies and illnesses
  • Reduced risk of childhood cancer, diabetes and Sudden Infant Death Syndrome
  • Helps baby grow just right
  • Better brain development
  • The only perfect food for your baby.
For you:
  • Reduced risk of osteoporosis
  • Reduced risk of breast, ovarian and cervical cancer
  • Always ready, no bottles to make
  • Money savings – nothing to buy
  • Regain your shape faster
  • A special closeness that only you can give.

Birth Certificates

You will be given a birth certificate worksheet that needs to be completed before you and your baby can leave the hospital. This information is necessary for the State of Ohio to process your baby’s birth certificate. You’ll then be provided with a birth certificate form that must either be mailed or taken to the Government Service building on the corner of High and martin Luther King (345 High Street, Suite 330). Each birth certificate copy that you request will cost $20. It typically takes two – four weeks to process a birth certificate.

Unmarried couples: The State of Ohio requires that a notarized affidavit be signed by both the baby’s mother and father in order to place the father’s name on the birth certificate. The hospital has notaries on staff. Both parents must be present for the notary to sign the affidavit. Both parents must also present the notary with picture identification.

Social Security Number

Your baby’s Social Security card will be mailed to your address within three – five weeks after delivery. If you need proof that a Social Security card has been requested, ask for a Social Security form.
